I will be replacing the wood deck on the bow of my 1959 Celeron, along with refinishing the rest of the wood, this Spring, and to do that I must remove the rub-rail. This could be tough because it's getting brittle, but with some care and a little heat I hope to do it without ruining it. However, I have been wondering whether it's original. I wouldn't be surprised if a vinyl or rubber rub-rail made in the 1959 would have fallen apart long ago.
Mine (in attached photo) is red, all non-metal (vinyl? rubber?) and opens up to two flaps, with one tucking under the other after the rail has been screwed on to the boat.
So, for owners of MFG boats with wood tops, I have a few questions for you:
1. What color is your rub-rail?
2. Do you believe it is the original?
3. Does it have a visible metal strip like modern rub-rails do?
Thanks.
