Is the rub rail frame supposed to have a bead of marine caulking/sealant around the bottom, sealing it to the hull? This is related to my fiberglass runabout. It appears to have had one at one time, maybe...

Re: Rub rail question

is the sikaflex better than the marine 5200? i have some sikaflex from work but i went out to buy 5200 to seal up some stuff like the aluminum rub rails and where the outboard meets the transom.

Re: Rub rail question

5200 is permanent and 4200 is better for non permanent installations.

Silicone is for fishtanks and trix are for kids!

I would not "bead" under your rub rail.. top... yea..under..no..

Under beads will only trap water preventing H2O from running out of that environment.

more boats let water in from not letting water out.

water introduction happens from faulty hull deck joints or improper beading .. use 3m 5200 on counter sink screw holes on your rub rail..snaps .. small mounts only.

Use 4200 on railings, cleats.. soft mount hardware etc.

Make sure you countersink all fasteners or snaps first for a gasket hole.
