My 1982 90 hp Johnson v4 was running like crap this weekend so..... upon closer inspection I found I had a water spurting out of the exhaust manifold gasket. I decided to tear into it myself and after removing the exhaust cover found small bits of rubber in there. Would these have come from the impellar?? or what?

Re: rubber bits in exhaust manifold?

it actually sounds like the diverters in the cooling system, are shot. they direct water in the proper directions. it would be hard for impeller parts to get thru the thermostat. but if it got hot enough to damage the diverters, i would check the impeller, and tstat also. the diverters probably need to be replaced.

Actually it could be pieces of impeller. The t-stats are at the end of the water flow, not the beginning.

Re: rubber bits in exhaust manifold?

Ill check both. It was hot at some point because the coils were slightly melted on one side of the block. I never heard an alarm (better check that too?) and I always have had decent water flow at the tell-tale hole. Im actually surprised because of the rubber bits congregated just inside the tell tale port of the manifold cover. Thanks for the info. Im a novice so I may have to take it in for the impeller and stuff. A few gaskets and coils I could handle but I may be getting in over my head with the others. Thanks.
