Rubber debris in cooling system

I have found black rubber debris in the cooling system (foot) of my Yamaha 50 hp motor. It is not the impeller but must come from another source. I have cleaned it out 2 times but it continues to appear causing the engine to overheat. Any ideas of the source of these rubber particles?

How do you know its not the impeller? Just because its still pumping water and you have a tell-tale stream doesn't mean the impeller hasn't lost a vane or two or is in the process of coming apart.

Thanks Silvertip. I know it is not the impeller because the first thing I did was to replace the old one which was worn. Any more ideas?

After replacing the impeller on my F100, I ended up dropping the lower unit 3 more times before I got all of the rubber out.

Thanks Badlar. That could be the problem. I have dropped the lower unit twice already. Maybe the third time is the charm.
