Rubber plug

I have one Evinrude -64 5,5 hp and one -76 6 hp. On both there is a rubber plug on the flat side of the shaft, midway beetween the powerhead and the cavitation plate, on the same height as the exhaust hole. Diameter less than 1/2 inch. Could somebody tell me what purpose it has?

Re: Rubber plug

I don't really understand the position you refer to, & not familiar with those exact motors, but on some I have seen a similar rubber plug that covers a cavity & a bolt head that attaches the 2 housings together

Re: Rubber plug

Thank you, but I don't think you have guessed right. I have taken it out and from the colour of the metal under it I think it is copper or brass.

Re: Rubber plug

You are looking at the upper grommet for the water tube. The rubber you see is the tab on the grommet to keep it in place.
