Hi Dave<br />I am probably wasting my time here. Why are you looking at some old wore out hunk of junk? Hey there is nothing wrong with buying a used rig. You need to look for something that shows pride in onership. A unit that the owner has taken the time to keep up. Details, everything works right down to the map light. The owner has kept detailed maint.records, not just a hand full of old nasty recietes. You know the kind of owner that if he bent the tung on his trailer, he would have it repaired emeaditly. Now that you know what junk looks like, go buy yourself a boat. Good luck, take your time, it may cost a little more now, but it will be cheeper in the long run.

that sounds like the 800 series omc. they stopped producing that drive in 1986. it was a poor design to begin with, & not only that since omc has gone belly up, you'll have a hell of a time finding parts for that drive. most mechanics won't even look at one. look elsewhere. u may get stuck with a drive that u can't get parts for.

feedback is appreciated! the reason i am asking questions is so i dont buy $2k "bargain" and end up with $3k worth of repairs. as i am new to boats i rely heavily on input from others. its likely ill pass this one by and save some more money. thanks, dave

Dave I agree with most of what was said but I do have one of those 400/800 OMC outdrives. Mine is a 1980 and I have repalced the Seal around the outdrive one time. When You install the new one you are supposed to use a urafhane sealer under rubber. So it just depends on how much of the glue you wipe up after get it all tightened down. In the 22 years I have had my outdrive I had the water pump replace one time but the old one looked perfect. This year for the first time I have a problem in the upper gear box. Cost to fix it range form 700 to have it fixed to 1830 to have a competely rebuilt whole unit installed. Parts are still available now but can not swere to futher. Out drive does have some advantages over newer units, Like outdrive turns 90 degrees where new units are about 60 degrees. Makes a big difference when docking in heavy winds or turning in tight places. Like I said I do agree with most of what was said and today with parts questions I proabably would not buy this unit.

You always have to consider what your time is worth and how well you can perform the job.
