I have a 2002 Merc 75 HP 2 stroke 3 cyl (75ELPTO) that has started to make a rubbing/maching noise once it gets warmed up (aprox. 15 minutes of cruising). The noise sounds like pieces of metal rubbing together. The noise is also present when the engine is in neutral. It disappears once the engine is stopped for a while and cools down. I have be unable to reproduce the noise with engine out of water using muffs - I guess it just doesn't get warm enough.
I've read a couple of previous posts regarding this problem but there were very few answers. Anyone else seen this problem (note this engine has the same block as the 90ELPTO) and any ideas of the cause. I'm suspecting a failed crankshaft bearing
- I hope I'm wrong.... Any ideas?
