Just as the title implies, my 93 Evinrude 50hp overheated. Luckily this engine is still under warranty so its no cost to me. My question is what do you think went wrong? It was pumping a solid stream of water the entire time, there was a pop, my rpm's dropped, a puff of smoke out the exhaust and the buzzer went off. No weeds wrapped around prop or anything. Completely out of the blue.

This engine was just rebuilt about 2 months ago by a Marina, who said it overheated on the previous owner. So they bored over both cylinders and replaced pistons, rings, carbs etc.. (total rebuild). So could this have anything to do with the problem?

Was it something I did wrong? Fuel/oil mixture has been 50:1 and I run ethanol-free gas. The Marina said sometimes they "just overheat." And I'm not exactly sure I buy that. Is it likely it will happen again, or do these things sometimes just happen. Perhaps boring it over increased the horsepower a little bit too much for the cooling system? Thoughts, input, suggestions....???

Yikes, most warranties will void for overheating. How long have you had it ,and how many hours have you used it before the problem?I would advise you dont say it overheated .Let the mechanic draw the conclusion and go from there.Did it restart and run OK or is it just not running at this point. There are many possibilities ,but, without knowing what actually happened ,can't really help.Engines dont just overheat.Either impeller, thermostat, debris, and other things can cause it happen.

wow ....whats the point of an over heat alarm if it goes off the same time the motor self destructs....you could just use the self destruction part as the alarm!!!!!

the alarm should be going off around 240 degrees....

the motor should,nt seize at that temp???

I've had the engine about a month. I brought it in and said the overheat alarm went off, don't know why. They said they think there might've been a clog in the water pick-up but who knows. They are currently boring over the bottom cylinder and replacing the piston and everything.

When I was on the lake it took about 15 minutes for the buzzer to stop coming on when I turned the ignition, so after 15 minutes I started it up and quickly drove about 500 yards to the landing with no problems.

I'm thinking once this problem is fixed, and the warranty expires, I'll probably try and sell this boat/engine combo. Its been expense after expense from day one.
