John, put a new t-stat back in. The engine is designed to run at a particular temp. to aid in the combustion of the fuel/oil mix. Your block ain't hot enough to alow a smooth idle.

Put in a new t-stat and then get the engine up to temp before making idle adjustment.

Keep us posted....Thanks.

John
You do not not need anything above 87 octane. If your motor is up to temp should be able to hold finger on top of head for about 4 sec. I would do the decarb thing then change the plugs warm engine up and adjust the idle mixture. When adjusting idle mixture turn the knob a little at a time and give motor some time to react. Plug gap should be .030.

If you want to check spark open up one of your old plug to 7/16 of an inch make sure it is grounded move one of your plug wires to it and start motor. Should get a good spark. Shut down motor and do the same to the other plug wire.

Boatist,

You said to use a 7/16" plug gap to check the spark. Does it matter which of the four versions of ignition systems these motors came with?

I have the same problem, "poor idle", but on a 15 hp 'rude. I also suspect the timing/ignition system. I have a post on this forum looking for help as well.

Marty
The reason I said 7/16 if because of some of the systems may be damaged if you just hold the wire out one inch. All the systems should jump a 7/16 gap with out damage when not under compression. Just make sure you have plug grounded. Way I do it is made a plug ground wire with battery charger connector clamp then run other end of wire to a ground with a ground clamp. I have a 1975 15 hp with points. You can check timing with a timing light. The index mark is kinda between the carb and the throttle cam just below flywheel. Both plugs time to the same location. OMC Joe really good on OMC outboards. Also lot of good info on link below.

http://www.pugetsoundanglers.org/Fishing Info/Johnson 9.9_15.htm
