Rude 90 70HP VRO - warning horn on all the time...

Hello!

I have a 1990 70HP Rude with VRO.

When I turn the key in the ignition instead of the chirp - the warning horn just stays on - even when I haven't even turned the engine over. When I do turn the engine over, the warning horn continues to stay on.

The engine is definitely getting oil as I can see the exhaust coming out of the lower unit and it runs well for several minutes.

I haven't had the boat that long - but have had similar flaky problems with the horn - this has happened before but the horn went off after the engine actually turned over so I didn't think to much about it.

What sensors are active when you just turn the key that would cause the horn to activate without the engine even on?

Thanks in advance!

Try disconnecting the sensor leads one at a time to isolate the culprit.Temp sensor, oil reservoir, and finally the vro harness. If neither silences the alarm ,it may be the alarm itself.

Thanks!

Any insight as to where to find the temp sensor, oil res sensor and vro harness sensor? I've got the SELOC manual for my engine but there's nothing (at least that I've found) that shows me where the VRO sensors are located.

The oil reservoir sensor leads (two wires)on many models can be traced to unplugable connectors on the port side in the engine compartment.Temp sensor leads (two wires)(exit the temp sensor just above and to port of the top sparkplug area. The vro harness can be traced from the vro to its amphenol connector also on the port side engine compartment.

My money is on the oil reservoir sensor, based on nothing but a wild guess and statistical failures.

Strange. I'm not sure exactly what cable I detached but doing so and then reconnecting it re-enabled the chirp and killed the constant alarm when they key is turned in the ignition.

The cable was the one on the port side of the engine compartment with 2 wires - one tan one black. It appears to match the same wires that go into the contraption on top of the oil container. It's a weird rubber type thing with a clamp I had to pull off and then pull the 2 connectors off. I'm assuming that's the VRO harness but not sure what that is actually warning me about?

I'm actually about to sell this boat (job is relocating me from MN back to TX) so my suggestion to any buyer would be to dump the VRO and just pre-mix. It sounds like 2 of the 3 warning horns have to do with VRO. I know this thing isn't overheating (especially since the horn came on the first time I turned the key after the engine hadn't been started in several weeks).

Hello,

I also had such a problem!
The horn inside the remote control box was damaged!
