While Test running my brothers new boat (5.7/pre-alpha mercrusier) I noticed a rumbling, almost grinding sound while in gear. It does not make this sound while on the hose, and it was quite a bit louder when turning than it is while going straight. I suspect that the U-joint between outdrive and engine is going out. Does it sound like I am on the right track? This is the first I/O I have had the displeasure of working on, so any help/tips would be great.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Rumbly Outdrive

Is it a brand-new boat or new to him? When was the last time the u-joint bellows was changed? Sounds like a bad gimbal bearing and/or bad u-joints. If it's a new boat take it back to the dealer.

Re: Rumbly Outdrive

Oh no, This boat is quite used. I have spent the last couple of days repairing the cracked exhaust manifolds. Got that problem fixed, now on to the next one. I have no idea when the bellows were last changed, or any piece for that matter. My brother thinks it is nothing serious and that he can just run the hell out of it forever.

Is there anywhere to find an exploded view of this outdrive before I tear into it?
