run away boat

I went night fishing a couple of days ago. I launch my boat by tying a lead rope to it and tie
a clove hitch around the winch handle. It's not a steep ramp and I back it into the water very slowly. Only this time I forgot to tie the rope to the boat. Thought I was going to have to swim for it but some real nice boaters towed it back to the bank.

I have to admit to doing this very same thing! I got to the lake about 5 AM one summer morning and was by myself, no one else in sight! I did the same thing you did! there I was looking at my boat out there just about 10 feet from the dock, it was a perfectly calm morning with no wind! I was just getting ready to strip down and go in to get it when a slight breeze came out of nowhere and it finally drifted in to the dock!

Hasbeen

Also had a run away sailboat quite a few years ago. Had launched the boat (a 16 ft catamaran) and had to take a leak. I pulled the boat up to the bank backwards was in the bushes and saw the boat sailing away by itself. I ran and dived in the water and managed to grab one of the rudders and pull myself aboard. Those people on the boat ramp must have had a good laugh.

All righty my turn to admit a real boner..Today went to the ramp with family and went to back down the ramp and a guy was throwing his cast net for bait fish or shrimp and pretty much just did'nt want to move but ok I move to other end of ramp with my 24 ft drinkin boat. Moved to other end of ramp and backed down released boat and tossed line to wife and kids for walking over to dock while i parked the truck/trailer. I walk back and see wife desperately trying to start boat in the middle of ramp, drifting. The ramp is on a major river in Fl and moves quick towards to ocean so I start running towards downstream dock so I can leap into the river and save the boat and loving, calm, and losing patience wife of 24 years. Look up and shrimper boy has caught up to my boat and waits on me to come down and admit that I tied the line that came loose. Wife did great but 220 merc on drinkin boat is a slow starter and needed to be choked and warmed up so her efforts appreciated but not effective. Oh well we got boat squared away and thanked S.B. and tucked my embarrassed %$#@& and headed out. I always tell the kids to stay out of the way and Dad will launch the boat...For dinner tonight "'Crow"...

Speaking of castnets I saw a guy throw one on top of a large gar and almost got pulled in because the line was looped around his wrist...he lost the net. Also was wading along in knee deep water dragging the castnet line close to my foot. A gar hit the line and almost jerked me down.
