I have a 1990 6hp evinrude rebuilt the carb new gaskets, needle valve and seat. Can start motor with sqeezing fuel bulb on fuel tank line. Motor will run if I keep choke closed, but motor starves out when choke is open, even when motor is warm. Am I looking at fuel pump???

Re: run by choke

When you rebuilt the carb did you soak it in cleaner, clean every passage and then blow it out with compressed air? If not, you really didn't rebuild it. If you did, then yes, you probably are looking at a fuel pump rebuild as well. Make sure there are no air leaks at fuel line fittings and that the tank is vented. Try a different tank if possible.

No. The primer takes the place of the fuel pump when you start the engine. If you were stalling after the engine ran a couple minutes then perhaps the fuel pump could be blamed.

You have insufficient fuel delivery, if you have fuel reaching the carb (take the line off, pump the primer to make sure) then the problem must be in the carb itself. Likely a bit of crud got missed when you rebuilt it.

Re: run by choke

Soaked carb in parts cleaner and blew out passages with compressed air. motor will not start with a crank. I have to close choke to start it. Once I pull the rope, it starts and seems to run fine, now, and I can open the choke and it will continue to run. Next ques: Is this the proper way to start it, or should I expect it to start without the choke, when it's warm.
