I need to run my 175 HP black Maxx on my engine stand. I only want to idle it with muffs on it. I don't want to remove the control box and cables from the boat. I can place it in neutral and choke it manually. What is the safe way to wire it up?

Yes, you can. Just remember that to stop the engine you'll have to ground the kill wire (Black/yellow)... Or choke it to death ...

Or, wire a toggle switch on the wire that powers the ignition module. Just in case if you need to shut it off in a hurry.

Re: run engine on stand

Thanks for the responses. If I run a properly sized cable from the battery to the cranking solenoid switch hot terminal, a wire for starting to the ignition post on the solenoid and a ground cable from the battery to the engine, I should be able to crank it, right? Now how do I connect the battery to the engine to allow it to run, protect the rectifier, and stop it?

Re: run engine on stand

Heavy red cable to the post on the solenoid... Heavy black cable to engine ground.

That is all you need.

To start it just momentarily short the red battery lead to the start terminal (yellow/red) on the solenoid. To stop it short the 'kill' wire (black/yellow) to ground....

Where is the kill wire (black/yellow) wire located?

Re: run engine on stand

It's the centre post on each of the switchboxes. Also the mercury tilt switch if your engine has one...
