Re: Run engine with hose ?

Motors need water to cool them this usually is sucked up from the sea etc. When on dry land you fake this by using an adapter with a garden hose. The adapter is usually in the form of rubber cups that clamp on the water intake on the bottom on the leg, the hose is plugged into these and water is then available to the motor. Other types are available with various springs and rubber bits to fit the particular motor. A visit to you marine supplier should help. We call then "rubber muffs" as in earmuffs. Some motor have a screw in fitting.

Hope this helps

is there any reason to use the muffs instead of just a 5-gallon bucket of water?

Yeah, there is..

My outboard would require alot more then a 5 gallon bucket.. like perhaps a 44 gallon drum cut down..

A bit OB is a pain to put in a tub.. water muffs are easy and convienent for flushing and stuff..

just don't rev the engine too much while on muffs..

If you want to rev it, then a big tub of water is definately preferable..

regards

Frank

rember too that load on motor is different with muffs than in water "believe it or not", thats why the best tune is done by a mech with a test a tank, which is a long purpose built tank to allow the ob to run in gear at revs, not recommended with muffs, also with muffs there is no load on prop. With my little 3.3 i flush it in a plastic bucket! "horses for courses"
regards :)
