hello all, i have a 2005 yamaha f60 4 stroke. i was told to run it out of gas after each use. i know with carbs this is true but i don't understand why this matters with injectors. thanks for your advice, joe......

Re: run out of gas?

I don't think I would do anything on purpose that would get air into the high pressure part of the EFI.

Just an old fart's instinct.

Use Stabil Marine all the time in your gas tank and install a fuel/water separater, and then just leave your fuel system primed.

Re: run out of gas?

what kinda daycare tech told ya that?
keep running the HP pump dry and you may get to post how much they cost.
the system is self bleeding, no worries about air.
worries are that the fuel goes nasty and takes out the pump or one or more injectors.
without air fuel degrades much slower.

would ya mind if you, me and DonS try to post a sticky on how to properly prep an EFI,not DFI or carbed, system for storage?
remember, my side is technically advanced for the engine, woefully inept to try to post it.

What is the common sense method in this situation?

Should I really run my motor dry every time? '77 55hp evinrude two cyl/strk. how do i do that? Disconnect the fuel line at the motor I presume.... what is the purpose? I use my boat once a week.

Do you run your car out of gas after every use, probably not, your ourboard is no different.

I have seen alot of threads like this and have never figured out a benafit to doing it, the only time I drain my carbs is when I am putting the boat up for winter and then I drain the carbs at the float not run the engine dry.

You definitely shouldn't. One cylinder will inevitably run dry before the others robbing it of needed lubrication and damage can result.

ondarvr, while being new to four stroke outboards i'm trying to learn to protect my investment. the common sense part is that through expierience i learned not to leave gas in the bowl of a carb for extended periods. having injectors and no bowl the common sense to me is there is nothing to drain. as i said i am new to four stroke outboards so your common sense may be better than mine. if i were as smart as you i wouldn't have to ask ?'s. respectfully, joe

I asked because you said you ran it dry, then you said you would use the common sence method and hope for the best and that you had a water separater and used Stabil.

I wasn't sure if you left it dry, or started it back up with the stabil in the fuel.

Re: run out of gas?

i have had this boat for three months. it had a water seperator when i bought it. i put in a new filter and have used marine stabil every time i fuel up, about three times now with my 20 gallon tank. i ran the engine dry after the idiot at the authorized yamaha repair shop told me to yesterday afternoon. i didn't think this sounded right so i posted here. after the responses i went out and started the motor and let it run a few minutes. it could be possible the mech. assumed i had a 2 stroke as i was buying plugs and just gave him the #'s of the ngk plug wich is a special order plug for some reason, that's what west marine said, they don't carry them. thanks, joe

Re: run out of gas?

look at the yamaha forums, look for the F150 to fog or not to fog post.
it tells you how to properly set up the EFI fuel system for extended storage.
running dry can and does lead to HP pump burn outs.
NOT CHEAP.
