A difficult and dangerous situation...but it must have looked funny! :D

A runaway fishing boat gave emergency rescue workers the runaround for nearly an hour on Lake Dunstan on Monday.

The out-of-control outboard raced around in circles for more than 40 minutes as the Clyde rescue boat attempted to bring it under control.

A Fire Service member who tried to jump into the empty boat slipped and fell into the lake before another member successfully clambered aboard and brought the vessel under control.

A 57-year-old Dunedin man was trout fishing alone on the 3.6m aluminium boat about 400m upstream from the Clyde Power Station when he fell into the lake shortly after 8.30am.

A witness, Rex Parkin of Alexandra, said the man appeared to hook his throttle when casting.

"He stood up to cast, and the next thing the boat is racing off and he's in the water. It just shot out from under him at full throttle

(story from Otago Daily Times - NZ)

Full Story

Re: Runaway Fishing Boat

Years ago there were a couple of young fellows water skiing out from the marina. The guy on the ski fell and when his buddy spun the boat around (a 13' Whaler) he got tossed. The boat just continued to go in a circle and the two guys swam to shore -- unconcerned.

Almost immidately a sheriff deputy sees whats going on and goes off the deep end. He runs to the boat ramp and takes over a boat coming in. Starts yelling at the guy driving and tries to jump in before the boat was really close enough. You guessed it -- sloosh!! Gun and all. And yes, we're talking salt water.

He gets in the boat, yells at the guy to drive out to where the Whaler is going around in circles. Well the guy doesnt want to get close to this deal at all. Now, keep in mind the boat isnt near anything or anybody.

The guy says he isnt going to risk getting his boat damaged so he heads back to the ramp with the cop still yelling. In the meantime the motor on the Whaler runs out of gas, the 2 boys swim out, jump in, switch tanks and leave.

This leaves the deputy standing on the dock, dripping wet and wondering why he just gave all his equipment a salt bath.

Obviously the 2 boys knew the tank was about empty therefore they weren't concerned. The whole thing didn't take 10 minutes.

Re: Runaway Fishing Boat

My boats have all had side bolsters in the helm seat. I was pulling a buddy of mine skiing with his boat (1850 Bayliner) and when he went down I did as I always do, take a quick look and turn hard to protect the skier from any traffic. Without the side bolsters I am used to, I ended up on the floor . . . Luckily I managed to hold onto the wheel and pull myself back up into the seat before I hit anything or anybody. Live and learn. Or maybe that's boat and learn?

That is why they make a kill switch, but you have to use it too.

Witnessed the same thing here about 8 years ago, started out with two guys showing off for their GF's. Short story 2 girls thrown off the back of the boat (riding on sun deck). Dumb boys get thrown turning hard to "rescue" ladies already in the drink. All picked up by a passing boater as their boat turns circles in the open water. Several attempts to board circling boat fail. It's decided the best thing to do is just wait for the errant boat to run out of gas. No one harmed just wet and embarrassed.

Re: Runaway Fishing Boat

Here is one for this post. My dad was out by himself one day and was sitting up on the back of the seat hit a wave and almost went into the water. if it was not for the stearing wheel he would have been in the water. He told me this story and i almost fell out of the truck laughing so hard(have to know my dad) But after he had to replace the stearing wheel from where he bent it sideways. He had a kill switch put in. So leason learned for him (and me)

Re: Runaway Fishing Boat

We were 19 or so, me & a friend, fishing in a small natural lake in north Louisiana (Wallace Lake). In those days my bass boat was a 14ft flatbottom jon with a 'rude 6 and a paddle for a trolling motor and a texas rig worm for a depthfinder. ;) And I didn't mind drinking beer on the water then either. Anyways, fishing's slow so we're riding back to the ramp with our feet up on the bench seats, trying to pick a beer can out of the water at WOT and throw it ahead of the boat to try again. Missed, so we went into a u-turn to go back & get it, then another u-turn & we're back on course, except that the 2nd one coincided with our own wake at a very inopportune time. We both rolled back over the side. Bad news: this was the deepest part of the lake, and who needs PFD's (for some reason in those days a seat cushion was all you needed on that rig); good news: the water was just up to my chin.

A 6-horse motor turned full to port makes a pretty tight, slow circle, even at full throttle. The gas tank was floating the full length of the fuel line away from the boat so Kelly was able to disconnect it. Lost some fishing tackle & a couple shirts. Saved the cooler (with the beer), the motor and the boat. Those were the good old days.

Re: Runaway Fishing Boat

When I was a young man I had the pleasure of working for our State Dept of Fish and Game. Part of the job was doing 'creel census' (checking salmon catches) at launch ramps and marinas.

Daily entertainment ranged from the mundane 'plug out of the boat', to the rather unusual.

I remember the floating boat trailer (it was made out of wood), the amphibious Cadillac convertible (no, they don't float very well), and the very best SHT I ever saw, 'bareback waterskiing'.

On this particular day I was stationed at one of the most popular launch facilities. It is a Saturday, it is lunchtime, and it is the high point of the season. There are probably over a hundred people on the dock and still more are having lunch up on the cafe deck.

A couple guys pull up in what was (in that era) the standard fishing boat. A lightweight plywood runabout with a 30 hp outboard.

Why heck, they've had a nice day... nice fish. Lucky guys you might say, up to that point anyway.

Fisherman number 1 steps up onto the dock and holds his Salmon up. Nice fish. Crowd applauds.

Fisherman number 2 steps out of the boat with his salmon. I was only standing a few feet from him and I can still remember the little details to this day.

The big grin on his face, his unlit cigar clenched between his teeth, and the straw hat rakishly cocked on his head (with his fishing license clipped in place).

Then, in slow motion, I can see his his eyes opening wide... the cigar dropping from his jaw... the salmon flying into the water.

All this is a moment forever frozen in time, the moment he hooked his pantscuff on the throttle lever. In a blink of an eye, the engine roars and he disappears from view.

The runabout takes off at full throttle, with the helm (fortunately) going to full lock. He is hung up quite securely by his pantscuff, being drug along on his back, arms flailing the water.

The boat is spinning wildly in the narrow channel and he is yelling... each time the boat spins, the yell gets louder as he faces us, then fainter as he is spun away.

Something like:
"yyaaaaaaaYAHAAAAAAyyyyyhhhhhaaaYYYYAAAAHHHHyyyyayaaahhhh".

On about the 10th spin, the boat whumps into the mudflat across from the landing killing the engine and slinging the fisherman into the mud.

For a few moments there is dead silence on the dock. Then a sigh of relief as the fisherman staggers to his feet... wiping the mud out of his eyes.

Then somebody let out a giggle. The first outright laugh followed shortly, then the mirth built to a roaring flood.

I looked around, unable to believe what I have witnessed. The scene wasn't pretty.

Grown men are crying. I see grizzled old fishermen with tears running down their eyes, some doubled over in laughter, some down on their hands and knees, others biting their tongues so hard they must have bled for days.

Then the poor bedraggled victim standing over on the mudflat starts laughing with them... in moments he is laughing so hard he can hardly hold onto the side of the boat.

After a while, he regains his composure and he and his boat are helped back to the dock.

Towels are produced, along with a beer and a fresh cigar. Aside from a dented ego, fortunately there were no injuries. In retrospect, he was a very lucky guy after all.
Things could have turned out very badly.

If only video cameras has been invented back then...

Next time, maybe the story of the "flying fiberform".
