I'm running out a 1972 Evinrude 85hp I picked up as an unknown basket case. The thing fires up and runs really nice. And it pushes my boat, with the wife and the dog and a full load of fuel, like it's empty. But....
I was running at full throttle, and it's singing a beautiful note. But it suddenly stops for a half second and then picks right up again. Just a sudden momentary break in the noise. Like the prop hit a fish?
It's got even compression on all four cylindars. 120 about.
It's got a good water pump.
It's burning 50:1 off road gas.
It purrs like a kitten all the way from a low grumble to high tenor.
When I got it to the dock the engine drain hole on the front of the motor gave very slightly warm water.
One guy might think it's just a miss and one cylindar didn't spark on one stroke. It's that brief. But another might think it was something more sinister.
What does the board think??
