I have a 1983 Mercruiser 305/5L MCM228R serial#6275628. It has the Thunderbolt ignition. I want to run the engine out of the boat and can turn it over using a remote switch. I can get a spark by connecting the coil to the positive battery terminal. All the electrical connections are hooked up (the Thunderbolt ignition; distributor; coil; alternator; etc.). Obviously the wiring harness is disconnected. My question is: Can I destroy any of the components in the Thunderbolt ignition which I think I am bypassing with the direct connection from the battery to the coil? Is there anything else I should be worried about?

Re: Running engine out of boat

When the engine is in the boat and you turn the key to RUN, you are putting 12 volts directly on the coil+.... So doing that with the engine out, is the same thing.... :D
