Running engine with a hose attached

I test fired my engine today having put it all back together, the stern drive dolly I made allowed me to fit it back on very easily, it was priceless - took me all of 10 minutes :)

Ran the engine with a hose attached directly to the engine rather than using muffs. My question is should the impeller be pumping water back out? Or will it only do this when the drive is submerged?

Getting ready to take her for a run next weekend and want to be sure I dont have any issues with the new impeller I just installed.

It has to pump water back out. What goes in must come out. If water is flowing from the hose thru the engine it must come out somewhere.

With the engine running, you should have water coming out of the exhaust relief ports at the bottom of the transom shield.
With the engine off, water will probably come out only at the water pickup ports on the side of the lower unit.

It would be really handy if you put the engine model number and type of drive in your signature so we don't have to search to find out what you have.

Thanks I have updated my signature with the information requested.

I have no reason to think my impeller is not working, just want to be double sure before plonking it on the water.

Thanks again for your invaluable assistance and patience with my ignorant questions.

How long did you run the engine? If it was winterized, it will take a few seconds to fill the block with water
before you see it exiting from the exhaust ports.
