have an evinrude 110 outboard and have been told to run fuel out of engine after every trip--is this good for the engine since it needs oil to lubricate--i do understand that oil is in fuel while being run out but is it good to do this

Re: running fuel out

first of all you will never run all the fuel out. There will always be a bit left in the float bowl. Secondly unless you go months between trips I think you got bad advice. When storing in the fall I will use stabil in the gas on my last run and let it go at that as far as the fuel. I can't recall a problem with a carb in the spring when doing this.

you also run the risk of running a couple of cylinders lean and doing some damage.

Re: running fuel out

add seafoam to your fuel as directed on the can, will help keep clean carbs clean.

Re: running fuel out

Every one has a opinion and my experience has been to run it out. I own a 1973 Evinrude 6hp that I've always run dry. It's 36 years old and the carb has never been off it. I just started it last week and it started right up and runs perfect. I also owned a 70 Johnson and a Yamaha 130 with no problems. It works for me.

I never run it out. Use stabil or equivalent and all should be well.

Re: running fuel out

I always run them out of fuel, (as me Father always did), and I now run and have always run a lot of older engines.

The remainin' oil film (with modern 2 stroke oil), is durable enough to prevent ANY damage durin' the run out.

I have never had to R & R a carb on an engine, (that I have maintained) n' some are over 40 years old.

I have never had to deal with scored pistons either, (an exagerated often mentioned corncern: IMHO), and have always gotten good LONG life from every engine I own.

I also am a believer in occasional Sea Foam use especially near the end of the season. I use Sea foam in all me 4 stroke small engines, as I never know how long it will be between starts.

We want all boats to float here and mine floats fine runnin' the engine out of fuel.

Me over priced $.02. JR
