running gas out ?

I have a 1991 Johnson with VRO disconnected, the manual says not to run gas out of carbs as it will cause an oil issue with VRO installed. What about with VRO disconnected? My 1994 9.9 manual said to always run carb empty before storing and I did for 13 years and never had a problem. I am still using the VRO pump for fuel and wondering if it would cause any problems running it dry. I have already faced gumming problems by not running carbs dry, trying to avoid future problems. As usual, thanks in advance for the generous help I get on this forum.

Re: running gas out ?

The reason is that if you have multiple carbs that one or two carbs will run out of fuel before the last one does. The fuel also has the oil in it thus one cylinder, or 2 will run without lubrication until the last cylinder runs out of fuel. Which is bad. This does not happen on single carb engines like your 9.9

And either way put stabilizer in the fuel prior to your last run to help stop the carb gumming if you dont get all the fuel out. And I also fog the engine as well.

As samo points out, running a two stroke engine out of fuel means that the oil is not there when the engine quits. Not a good thing. Run the fuel stablizer, fog it, then go to the trouble of removing the air box and draining the carb bowls. It is even more important if you are running a fuel with alcohol in it. It will seperate and give you a hard time if left alone.

your 1991 WHAT??? can't answer without the proper input. your 9.9 does not have a vro pump, and only one carb, so it does not hurt it to run dry.
