running in gear out of water?

I am looking at running my motor in gear in my driveway so I do not need to run to the river and launch each time try and fix my problem.

So to those of you who have done it, how large of a container do I need? It is an 87 90hp evinrude. I don't know what will happen if I run it in gear and the container is too small, will it want to move with the turbulance, ect.

I need advice from others who have tried the same thing please. Thanks in advance :redface:

I am trying to find out why my forward does not engage, so I need to see if the prop is spinning.

Run on muffs ... you won't have a big enough container to run it in.

Muffs but do not over rev it or you will have a runaway on your hands.

What are you trying to check that requires it to be in gear but without load?

Shift testing is ok, but performance testing probably will not work.

Not to smart to run in gear on muffs either. It works like a sushi machine

Load is not a concern, just don't want to drag it to the river each time, and then have to walk the boat back to the ramp when it does not go.

It needs to be under a load to run it in gear-the load is the water. If you must run it in a tank or barrel, find a test wheel (replaces the prop and gives the load it needs without splashing water all over). Takes my 20HP about 10 sec to empty out a garbage can of water. Should take a lot less for yours.

I've done it on motors up to 175 in a cut down 55 gal barrel (now about 30 gals) but it'll boil the safe water level out after about 3 seconds
But on all it was ONLY at less than 2000rpms!

Well it currently is not going into forward gear at all correct? And it's not electric shift or anything like that, right? Why do you even need the engine running? You should be able to check the linkage, cable adjustments and whatnot just sitting there engine off? At the very least you should be able to just do it on muffs without a problem. You don't need to rev it up or anything right? Just keep the kids, dogs, arms, legs, hands and feet away when it's in gear.

How about remove the prop and run it on muffs or in a drum? you'll be able to tell if it's in gear because prop shaft will be turning. Good to remove prop every now and then to check for fishing line around shaft, leaking seals, grease shaft splines, etc. Good Luck!

Yes, when it is in gear the prop should not spin at all. In neutral the prop should spin freely. with the engine off and the cable from your remote control disconnected from the engine slowly move the shift lever toward the reverse position. moving the prop into different positions so that you can feel where the clutch dog and reverse gear meshes. Then do the same in forward. My guess is that reverse will begin engaging imediately when you move out of the neutral position and forward will not engage until you are almost to the end of the throw if at all. If you find that is the case then you need to adjust your shift linkage. Ezeke gave a tip about that in your other post;

If the answer isn't found there then you'll have to look elswhere. Slipping prop hub? Only slipping in forward, not reverse? Unlikely but posible I suppose. Cable out of adjustment? Good luck!
