I have been thru the Carb. on My 1989 Evenrude
and I think I'm going to take it to the boat shop
but I wanted some opinions so I don't get ripped off. First at Idle it seems to load up,has strong smell of gas (not raw gas like a leak)and when you try take off without revving it up a few times to clear it out it will cut off.It runs 5600rpm's. Now the real problem I pulled the plugs yesterday and they were dry and somewhat clean, I think it is running too lean (at least on top end)I'm mixing gas so I know it is getting oil.The compression is still the same 92lbs in all cylinders (low??)Could it be thee reed valves or the jets or carbs are still clogged? This motor has set for about three years before I bought it and has very few hours. I have run it about 20 or 30hrs since I bought it. Thanks

Re: Running Lean????

Compression seems a little on the low side, but WOT RPM look good. Have you run a decarbonizer product thru the induction system? You may have stuck rings.

Reed valves are an infrequent source of problems and I doubt you would get 5600 RPM WOT if you had a reed problem.

If the plugs look really clean, you may have water getting into the cylinders. If the motor is, in fact, running lean, you want to find the cause, since continued lean running may cause major problems (i. e. burned pistons, etc.)

The loading up may be from improper float setting in the carbs, leaking float valves, etc. You may want to pull the carbs and clean them and check the float valves. Crap in the carbs could cause the lean condition.

Good luck!

Re: Running Lean????

Hey XP, don't sweat the compression too much. I have a 1994 Evinrude 225 with similar compression and it runs great at all speeds. Boat is 20'6" and motor turns a 24 pitch raker 5800 rpms at wot.
I am no expert but it sounds like carb kits could solve your problems. I use a small piece of wire to clean jets. The new gaskets, o-rings and needle valves (in the kits) can solve the problems you describe. I would also do a link and sync just to make sure throttle linkage and timing are adjusted properly. Total cost would be right at $100.00.
I cannot help with water in the cylinders. Do all 6 spark plugs look the same? Would it be common for all 6 cylinders to start leaking water at the same time? Maybe one of the experts here can give advice on how to check for water.

Re: Running Lean????

Thanks for the replies.Yes Sand Bass for the most part they do all look the same,There may be one or two that have a little more build up but for the most part they are the same. I was wondering also if it would be possible to get water in all cylinders at the same time. If so it would be missing or something (?)As far as compression I checked the compression when I bought the boat and it has not changed, so I guess it is ok. Again thanks for the replies
