If and when I get my 1972 merc 80 hp running I know you want water running through the motor if I use a test tank (barrel) should the prop be removed and if so when the motor is running is it ok to use the throttle or not and how much of the throttle should I use. I'm new at this game any advice is wanted. Thanks Bob

Typically when we run an o/b in the tank it has the prop installed or a test prop. We never go WOT in the tank either. Most I have ever gone is 3/4 throttle and that lasted less then a minute. Someone else will chime in shortly I'm sure.

BC, Depending on what you use for a test tank, will determine whether you can rev up the motor. What are you trying to accomplish by reving them up? You cannot set the idle mixture properly unless you are on the water, or an expert with a large test tank and test wheel.

Just when I get the motor running I can shift into the gears foward, nuetral, reverse. not get any rpms out of it just to see if she shifts thats all.

You can test the shifting on the muffs. You can test for idle power in a test tank. To test for more than idle power, you need a lake...
