Is it ok to start a 40hp Mariner whilst it is mounted on a stand/trolley?

Re: Running outboard on a stand

As long as you have a barrel of water and the lower unit is submerged deeper than the water intakes then yes, it is ok to run the motor.

I'm assuming it is a water-cooled outboard(there are air-cooled motors out there, but they are mostly older) so do not run it dry.

Make sure you put it in water or get yourself a set of earmuffs and then you should be ok.

just don't run it dry!!

If you run the motor dry, what can happen and how soon could it happen?
While looking at boats I have had multiple people run the motor for me dry for less than a minute.
