Built a new 350 for my Bay liner Nisqually. Building it my self rather than off the shelf goals were to get fuel consumption down as much as possible and modernize from 30 year old engine.

Has Vortech heads, comp cams low rpm hi torque marine roller cam in a roller block " Roller cam saves hp with reduced friction giving free hp and lowering oil temperature by keeping about 8 horsepower of friction heat out of oil." Steel roller rockers " longer valve guide life and another 8 horsepower of heat from oil ".

Main goals have been met. Fuel consumption for 4 hours of break-in, varying rpm, idle to plane, to 3800 rpm, short time at 4400 rpm, about 16 Gallons. Prop from 16 pitch 3 blade to 21 pitch 4 blade.

Surprising issue is that it runs too cold! Has a 170 thermostat. coolant runs 150 and best oil temp is 140 " this is without an oil cooler ".

Looking at options. live with it while changing too thinner oil for colder running and changing it often. or trying to get it up by bypassing some cooling water form cooler, or possibly another method.

Is this engine open or closed cooling? What temps are you getting from the exhaust manifolds?

Closed cooling, manifolds and block, all new. Heat gun says manifolds are 180 as well as coolant hose from them going into cooler. I don't think thermostat even opens up just running on bypass.

And i presume that the stat is properly seated in the housing-- no leaky edges or warped stat flange?

New housing, new gaskets, new stat. going to pull it anyway, it's pretty simple not much to get wrong without causing a leak. I always could have had a bought of old-timers disease

I would pull it put it in a pot of water start to boil it with a thermometer in it and see what temperature it opens up I do this to all thermostats to see if they are working properly even if they are new its really easy and can save a big headache i have had brand new tstats not open at the right temp
