hello all, i am in need of a battery for my 12v trolling motor. ive been looking at the different brands and ah capacities. im thinkin i may just go with two 6v batteries in series. anyone else doing this? ive searched and come up with all kinds of battery threads but nothing on this subject.

That is a fine way of making 12V. It is actually the preferred way vs two 12V in parallel.

good to hear that someone agrees. thanks for the input. it would appear that i could double my ah rating with close to the same weight of one 12v.

Re: running two 6v batteries

if you use 2 50Ahour 6V batterries in series your combined 12V Ahour rating is still going to be 50Ahours. The reason is that if you are drawing, for example, 10 Amps to your motor, each battery is delivering 10 Amps.

You can buy one heck of a big 12 volt deep cycle battery, take up less room, and spend less money than two-six volt batteries. But if they happen to be golf car or fork lift batteries go for it. Two sixes = 12 so it doesn't matter how its achieved.
