Running without battery

I tried a search and did not find an answer about my specific engine. My question is, is it safe to run my engine without the battery cables hooked up to a battery. My engine is a Tohatsu 9.9C, it is currently configured as a remote control setup. I am going to redo it to a tiller setup and don't want to use the battery/electric start all the time if I don't have to but I want to make sure I am not going to ruin any electronic's.

Yes. If you have a 4-stroke MFS9.9C, it's OK to run without the battery. Do not allow the battery cables to short together (touch each other), or you will blow the rectifier. Probably best to tape them off, or disconnect them inside the cowl. I'm not sure whether the rectifier from an old 2-stroke M9.9C (from the early 1990's) will survive running without a battery load.

OK, thanx Paul, mine is the older 2 stroke so I will just run with the battery to be on the safe side.

I believe you can just unhook the stator leads from the rectifier and tape them off.

That motor does not have a stator.
