1974 mercruiser I6 165hp. Outdrive out getting new upper seals. Is there a way to run the engine in the boat without the drive in....how could I get water in to cool. Would like to use downtime to do an oil and filter change but without warming engine/oil sucking out would be very hard. And no, with my old Aristocraft the pan drain is out of reach.

I think you can hook the hose up to the engine water inlet at the gimbal housing

Hoping one of the experts here that are more familiar with your particular boat can offer some specifics.

Re: Running without Outdrive

The reason you dont want to run the engine without water running through it is because you will burn up the impeller inside the drive. With the outdrive removed you dont need to worry about that. Go ahead and run the engine until it comes up to temp then change your oil. I wouldnt worry about hooking it up to a hose. If you really wanted to, the hose at the very top of the engine thats about 1" round, thats your water pickup hose. You can hook a hose up to that line if your really worried about it

What about the exhaust flappers and the exhaust bellows ? And with no water in it the temp gauge wont register so be aware you won't see it on the gauge. I would say it is a definitely bad idea.

Feed water to it via the inlet.....Don't run it dry

Ayuh,... Ya gotta plumb in water to the inlet at/ to the T-stat, or All the exhaust rubber parts will get burnt up....

As spdracr39 says,... It'll get expensive rather quickly, startin' it Dry,.... even for seconds...
