Runs great, then dies.

So i got the Starcraft out on the lake.
Puttered down the no wake zone and when i got clear i easied the throttle forward and she got up on plane, then chugged a couple times and bam, dead.
Gave her a pump of gas and it fired right back up, idled for a bit, So i figured why not try again. Pretty much the same thing.
Seems as if it can run all the gas out of the float bowl.
The wind was blowing to hard to mess around much so i headed back in with no problems.
Im thinking it may be the fuel pump not having the volume that it used to have.
But any other ideas are welcome.

Howdy,

You have a fuel flow problem.

Start at the fuel tank and work your way to the engine. Or alternatively, get an 'outboard' fuel tank and see if you still have the problem.

You have a fuel pick-up screen ( in the tank), an anti-siphon check valve (if installed), fuel filter, fuel pump, or carburetor problem. (or any combination of them)

Rick

All in the fuel system is new except for the tank and the pump.
The tank was removed and cleaned and pressure tested. that stupid check valve is working also. Wish i could get that out and toss it.

The only old part is the pump. That is why im leaning toward low volume.

I didnt think of running a O/B tank to make sure tho. I may try that just for fun.

Don't rule out a breaking down coil, unless you have replaced it of course. ours would putt all day long but when laying on the throttle would sputter and die. Coil was the issue.

i would just get rid of the checkvalve, mine was "working" also and i had the same problems as you, just replace it with a normal brass fitting

I will keep both of these in mind.
And no the coil is old also..:(

Since you said the coil is old and everything in the fuel system is new but the pump I would replace the coil with a new one. Then take it for a spin and see if that solved the problem. Everyone always says the fuel system when someone has this kind of problem. I say check the coil if it is not new. A coil can work fine 1 min then stop working the next. They can also last tears and years with problems then one day you go to the lake start it up, run for awhile shut it then go to restart to play some more and you start having issues like what you have now. You start asking ?'s and everyone says fuel issuse and it's a bad coil. Besides the coil is cheaper to replace then the fuel pump.

Problem solved.
It was the fuel pump. I replaced it and also re-cleaned the screen in the carb and she runs like a top.
The screen was about 1/2 full of really fine sand. It was also like this when i rebuilt the carb. Im guessing that the sand in the pump caused the issue in the first place. The shop I had clean the tank didnt say anything about it having sand in it, but they may have just cleaned it and not looked too.

My 888 did this as well.

One thing that is also happening is a little popping through the carb at full throttle.
I changed the fuel/water seperator, didnt look at the condition of the gas, but have run a lot of gas through it.

as learned on here the popping is from a lean condition, I am thinking a weak fuel pump would contribute to this.

Might be looking of one of those tomorrow.

The popping isn't a lean condition, it's a spark with an intake valve open. Bad valves, usually not, plug wires crossed, wrong timing or bad coil.
