Runs ok, but dies when in gear

I have a 1999 90HP Force. It Idles ok, and even runs ok when you give it more gas when in Neutral. The problem is when I put it in gear, it'll run fine at slow idle/trolling speed. But, when I push the throttle and try to give it more gas to go faster, it dies.

My initial thought was that it's not getting enough fuel, but that doesn't make the most sense, since I can rev it up in Neutral but then it dies when trying to rev it up when in gear.

It only dies when in gear and the engine is under load.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what it might be?

First thing you need is a repair manual to walk you through it.
Will involve removal and disassembly of the carbs, re-assembly and adjustments to linkages.
A factory service manual, or a Clymer service manual are your best options.

Re: Runs ok, but dies when in gear

I recently purchased this engine, it ran perfect on the boat it was on; now that it's on my boat I am getting the issue described above. I actually don't thinkg the carb should need to be cleaned since it was only a couple weeks in between running on the boat it was on to running on my boat.

Does this change your suggestion of what's wrong? Could it maybe be that I need to make an adjustment to the throttle cable or carb?
