Last week, while checking the status (how good/bad) the outdrive anodes were, I noticed quite a bit of rust color on the outdrive. Anyone tell me what this possibly from. The rust color is only in this area.

Is this a O/B or a I/O. To me if this is the only place it is probably the dirty water. If it was corrosion it would be white in color and more likely on the leading edges of the skeg and trim plate.Looks to be a little brown around the bilge plug also

Looks like you've been in the St Croix river ;) What color is the water you boat in?

Also the area surrounding your drain plug looks pretty bad - make sure it is not leaking and waterlogging the transom.

Re: Rust Color On Outdrive?

It's an I/O. GM/Chevy 5.7L/V8 engine and Mercury Alpha 1 (Generation II?) outdrive. Reason I put the question mark by the "Generation II is b/c I never knew that was included in the name of the drive. Found that out on the Internet.

Would this color thing be due to "brackish" water? Since moving to Jacksonville, and seeing this St John's River water, we humorously call it "root beer" water. Anyway, it's "brackish" where we put the boat in....... 11 miles south of downtown/Jacksonville Landing.

We are taking the boat into a local Mercruiser shop in a month or so, when their labor rate comes down for the "off-season" to have them replace the Trim Switches and will have them take a look at the outdrive also. We are pretty sure that we have a water leak somewhere, just don't know where. Last time we took boat out (10/13), and was heading back to the ramp area, there was more water in the bilge area than we think should be. We just had a new block put into the boat this last August and are fairly sure that the water isn't coming from it........but only the shop will be able to tell us that.

Wouldn't this rust color being all over the drive, not just where the picture is showing it is.

Maybe not enough Chromium ???? i.e. a bum piece of stainless . . . or even maybe something in and around there that is not stainless???

That would tend to deposit iron on top of the stainless

Looks like the rust color is everywhere that the water would run to after you pull it out of the water. Seems like a good flush and rinseoff would be a good practice if you
are boating in salty/dirty water. My whole boat looks pretty rusty after I pull it out of the river, but it always gets a quick rinse when we get home from there.

If your boating in brackish water i hope you have aluminum anodes on instead of zinc or magnesium.Does it come off by rubbing your finger on it?? I wouldn't worry to much about it. Like oldjeep said.

Re: Rust Color On Outdrive?

Everytime we come back to storage from putting it on the St John's River, we put the muffs/flusher on the drive and rinse/wash off the boat. But, come to think about it, I doubt if we actually wash the transom and drive area at all......rinse down, yes, but don't think wash.
