Just had an Evenrude s.s. prop repaired at the prop shop. Thought something was a bit different. He admitted that he didnt have time to repair mine, so he gave me one that was laying around the shop. It is a s.s. Evenrude also that had been repaired. Took the boat out and it did fine but I noticed random rust spots on the blades. I also noticed the hub rubber looked older than mine. I really think my origional prop was in better shape.
I would just take it back. get a refund. and go somewhere else., but this guy charged $85.00 and the only other shop around wanted $150.00
guess maybe you get what you pay for.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the rust??

Hard to say???? Could it be that the prop was welded (even with stainless material) and some residual rustable material got deposited? How big are the spots?

Im sure it was welded. Some spots rub off, but the larger spots (maybe an inch long and irregular) dont seem to rub off. The spots that do rub off leave a dark spot.

I'm not sure what advice you're looking for boatin but you could remove the rust with a coarse buffing wheel, 3M makes a good one that attachs to a drill motor, and paint the prop black.

If it were me? I'd get a refund on the prop and go with the other guy.

Why not go back and ask for yours telling him what you told us? He's still probably has it lying around since there is no definite buyer for it. Just get him to fix it and swap back when its ready.

Remember, you are potentially a repeat customer to him. Get a date from him for when 'your' prop repair and follow through. The squeeky wheel gets the oil so call him or go see him until it's done.

Do you have a spare prop? If not, you should. As another alternative, ask him for your original prop fixed and you will buy it too.

Yea, I'd make sure he's aware of what's going on with the prop you purchased and push him to fix yours right and then return the one you have after its ready....

I would buy mine back and keep one as a spare as cobra said.

Contrary to popular opinion, stainless will rust, just not as much as regular steel. Here on the coast most of the props I see have some rust. It generally cleans off with use.

If he was an honest businessman, he would have asked if it was alright with you to swap for another used prop. If he didn't tell you, then that is bad business in my opinion. I'd tell him you are not happy with the prop and tell him to repair yours and you'll swap him back when it's ready. Don't be timid, get what you paid for, which was the repair of YOUR prop.

Yup! This is correct. :)

See my reply in this thread:

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=005719#000001

Another excellent way to get ss to rust is to smack it with any steel tool. The impact imparts iron molecules into the surface of the ss. Never hit ss bolts or screws with a hammer.

I'd be more concerned about the age of the rubber hub than the rust. Those who say stainless can rust are right. Some alloys more than others. I agree with Cobra- I would have him fix your old one and trade or buy it back so I had a spare.

A plastic scouring pad will clean it up + a little cleanser if really bad - follow with a bit of wax.
