Re: Rust preventive

LPS-3 is the best. Leaves a waxy film and reseals itself. It is a lubricant available at most parts stores.

Bob

Re: Rust preventive

If we are talking about a lower unit, I would be inclined to sand out the rust spots to bare metal, then use a zinc phosphate primer (or really any good primer). Repaint with an off-the-shelf spray in the appropriate color (Tempo has a variety of colors). I've also had good success with regular auto paints. I think the trick is to keep at the touch-up so the rust doesn't take hold.

Here in Maryland, I've also used transparent anti-fouling spray made for lower units. This adds extra protection. If you don't need anti-fouling protection, use a clear coat for a similar effect. You can buy clear coat whereever you purchase auto paint.

Re: Rust preventive

LPS-3 should be used on all electrical parts and the powerhead...It meets mil. spec and is FAA approved coating for most all aircraft use.

Chumbucket,

Sand down the areas and wash with 50/50 mix of vinegar and water. Then prime with Zinc Chromate. Add several coats of desired color.

Re: Rust preventive

I use Boeshield T-9 on the powerhead. Seems to work fine. I'm sure you know that this is merely a "preventative" treatment, not a "cure".
