has anyone got any tips how to free a rusted clevis pin at the end of my steering cable, its difficult to get to at the back of the engine, I have tried heating it up with a tourch but can't budge it. I think I will end up drilling it but if anyone has a better idea, it would be great

Re: rusted clevis pin

Howdy,

It appears that it's been in there for quite some time without being removed or lubed?

I'll assume that you have sprayed it with WD40 or equivalent.

You might try using a C-clamp.

drill a hole in a small (thick) piece of steel or aluminum plate, large enough for the head of the clevis pin to fit thru easily.

Place the piece of plate with the hole in it on top (the head of the pin is "up"?) of the pin so that the head of the pin will fit up into the hole and use the C-clamp to "press" the pin up into the plate.

It shouldn't have to move very far to loosen it.

Heat is usually not very effective in removing rusted parts.....and I wouldn't go anywhere near the engine room with an open flame!!

Cheers,

Re: rusted clevis pin

I am afraid the blow torch came out in the end! I ground the top off the pin, lots of heat then cold wet cloth, clamp and a spacer as you suggested and budged it a bit, then proped it from underneath with a peice of wood on the engine mount and hit it with a punch and hammer!
Took about 4 hours in the end but I got it out!
Next was the cable, completely seize. More flames I am afraid. Wedged the steering wheel under tension then lots of heat to the tube, as soon as it retracted a bit I garabbed the wheel and put pressur on it. Took another 4 hours to get it out but it's all done now!
Thanks for the help, anyone out there doing a similar thing, it's at your own risk!
