I am in the process of restoring my Dad’s white 1977 Mitchell Tri-hull and I am trying to decide on the final paint process and preparation. I am using White Rustoleum Marine paint on the deck for sure. I am wondering if this paint will work below the waterline? The boat will only be in saltwater 3 to 4 times a year.

Also, is there special wax and release agent removal chemicals I need to use prior to painting.

If the boat will be kept on a trailer, and not moored for extended periods of time, it will be fine. No special wax/grease remover for that product, any wax/grease remover, or dawn dish soap and warm water, denatured achohol, acetone, will work ok. Do this before sanding so u dont embed contaminates into the substrate.

You can also consider an enamel hardener to add to the rusto paint for more durability, especially on the deck.

Yes, the boat will be trailered most of the time. Thank you for the quick response.

Check out the last link in my signature line. It'll have some good info on your painting process. BTW, you don't have to use the Rustoleum Marine Paint. The Oil Based PRO will work just as well and is a bit cheaper. I HIGHLY recommend you use the Hardener. You can buy it @ Tractor Supply or some Auto Paint stores.

That TSC Farm and Implement paint with the Hardener is like a rock Its a shame it only comes in the basic colors.

You can mix it to any color you need. I mixed Ford Blue and White to get Baby Blue!! Ezzzzzeeee Smeeeeezzzzzy to do. You can even use Oil Based Acrylic Artists Paints from Michaels to tint small amounts. Color should NOT be a problem

Hardener works w any oil based enamel, not just the TSC.

Any oil based enamel makers paints can be DIY blended for custom colors beyond selections on the shelf, TSC or not.

If your local ACE Hardware has a paint mixer, they will tint their RustStop self branded Rusto paint to any color you want.

funny you should ask that! i painted my boat with rustoleum paint....not even marine, just the regular stuff and it hasn't come off at all on the hull. as a matter of fact i pressure washed it today to get old mildew off it and it was fine. That being said if i had my time back i probably would have tried to restore the gel coat instead as the paint don't have the same shine.

If you use the Acrylic Enamel Hardener with the Rustoleum Paint, the finish has a MUCH higher gloss and is much more durable.
