Sorry to be a pain, but I'm standing in my local lowes and notice they have rustoleum topside paint for a quarter the price is interlux. Anyword on the quality and ease of application of rusto over interlux brightside? Also even though it says "above the water line" can it be applied under it, being as though my boat is always trailered and only sees water while I'm fishing?

Re: Rustoleum paint

The aluminum boat guys really like it, but I too was wondering how well it would work on the hull of a fresh water trailer queen.

I have heard that its been on several boats for 5+ years with no problems. As long as its trailered. I am using it on my Starcraft

Re: Rustoleum paint

I just talked to a rust-o rep. And she said if it's a trailer queen then I should not have any problems. Lowes even has the color I want. Guess I'll give it a try!

Yeah go for it. "top sides" basically means you can't leave it in the water for weeks at a time. None of my Rusto came off after a week at the shore this past summer.

bheff, I used it and I'm really happy with it. I would recommend that you put down a base primer. That worked really well for me.

LJC, you used it on a fiberglass boat? What kind of primer did you put down over it? Roll and tip or spray?

I just assumed we were talking about a tin boat. jcsercsa is not happy with how Rusto is holding up on his glass boat. I'd go with something else for glass or at least check with him to see if he has any tips.

Two things about paint. You get what you pay for generally, and prep is EVERYTHING. Paint may go on like poop, but if it was prepped right, it won't flake off 2 months into the boating season, or the first time it is stressed being put back on the trailer.

Re: Rustoleum paint

My whole thought process on the paint is maybe I should do an awesome job on prep and use a cheap finish like rustoleum because it is my first paint job and no matter what it is probably going to have to be redone in a couple of years. Is this thinking flawed? should I spend the money on a high quality paint? (perfection is out...can't touch it up.)

Looks Great . but its not holding up great !!! Its rubbed off where it sits on the trailer and the bow where the rope would hit it and on the keel [ thats my fault I beached her a on vacation ]

I will say it is holding it shine well !!!

I just wish it was harder !! I would give it a 3 out of 5 !!! John

Re: Rustoleum paint

Systemf, Yes, I used it on a glass boat. The PO of my boat had used spray paint on it. I used paint remover and got down to the original gel coat. I then lightly sanded the boat, then, if I remeber correctly, I used rustloeum marine primer. Then I "rolled and tipped it". After about 3 months, I went out and waxed it and it really shined up. So far, after two summers, no issues.

Re: Rustoleum paint

If it is naked aluminum, it needs to be chemically etched before primer or top coat will grab good. If the aluminum boat old paint is still grabbing good, do not sand it to bare naked aluminum.
Same for fiberglass. Has to be prepped properly, namely roughed up with sand paper, not sanded smooth as well....glass. So that the primer or paint will grab good.

Notice I said grab good, not stick good. The paint has to have microscopic roughness to grab onto.

I bet that is the problem jcsercsa is having. Surface was too smooth. I bet he can use a fingernail and peel the paint off from the edges where the paint has failed already.

Re: Rustoleum paint

jcsercsa said that it was rubbing off. To me that means its sticking fine just that the paint is soft and scratches and wears away easily............

Jcsercsa you want to clear it up?

Im torn on using rusto as well.............

I too would like some clairification. If it is going to rub off where the bunks hit in a season forget it.
