Re: rusty flywheel magnets

Did you position the new stator in the same position as the old one ?That is,do the wires come out from under the flywheel at the same position ?.

Also the stator has 2 pair of wires,as does the trigger.Do ALL the wires with a yellow band go to the same switchbox ?

Also brown leads and violet leads are easy to swap,as they discolor with age and look the same.Either scrape the insulation lightly with a knife to check color,or open up the jacket covering the wires to be sure of wire color.

DHP

Re: rusty flywheel magnets

Thank you DHPMARINE for the advice.

The guy who installed the stator said that there was only one position for it to be mounted. Is that correct or should I pull the flywheel?

I'm going to check the wiring myself today.

Re: rusty flywheel magnets

The stator does not control the engine timing it only produces the electricity to charge the battery and power the ign. system the trigger is what controls the timing

I'd look at how timing was done after stator install-just fixed a sportjet 120 where I'll bet the certified merc dealer didn't have tower likage at wot when timing after stator install.

Getting cold in Ontario to check this on water-and driveways tricky with sportjet-good luck.

Re: rusty flywheel magnets

Thanks for advice guys, checked all wiring from stator and trigger, looks good. checked TDC with dial indicator but didn't do timing yet because I don't know how. I will borrow a timing lite and read service manual soon. Any sugestions appreciated. Is timing difficult? Is it a dealer thing?
