I have my Great Uncles '56 Duratech S 15 that was powered by a Johnson 40 hp for years but is long gone. I need to repower and I don't want the headaches of an old motor so I'm wondering what I can hang on the transom as far as new production two or four strokes go? Can I go with a 20" shaft or is it necessary and possible to build up the transom? My Father took out the seat backs at some point so I need photos or description of what the S 15 interior looked like originally? What material is the windshield made of? Can scratches be polished out? I have a new fiberglass boat with a 115 Yamaha on it but something tells me I'd probably enjoy a ride in the old boat more. Lots of questions so thanks in advance.

Re: S 15

If you have the S15, the original specs say 33 hp, whereas the S15R says 40 hp. I have the full hp allowed on my Duratech, and it's a late model 2 stroke; I'm sure it could easily handle more, but I stick to the maximum. You may want to ask a motor shop which hp in a 4 stroke may equal the 33 or 40 in a 2 stroke. Also, there is a jack plate you can get which would attach to your transom, and it would allow you to then hang a 20 inch shaft.

It's the S15R and thanks for the catalog images that will help a ton. The last two things left to do are the seat backs and fix the wind shield.
