So I was out cruising today and unfortunately not at the helm :(
I heard the alarm go off, ran to the helm but did not look at any indicators.
I tried to re-start the starboard engine, but it wouldn't... sounded funny too.
after limping to the dock, took off the hood and saw metal shavings and knew I blew the powerhead, sure enough I saw a big hole in the block near the #6 piston and notice the engine oil tank was empty.... WTF!

I turned the key on and had green lights on the yamaha gauges.
remote tank was full, but engine oil tank ran dry and got no indication and it blew! that sucks, because I take pretty good care of my motors.
So I'm guessing the engine oil tank switch went bad? I also wanted to see if the manual oil fill override would work.. key on, flip manual switch, but oil tank would not fill... am i missing something?

Rodbolt, could I give you a call?... wanted to talk to you about replacing the powerhead and what could have went wrong? send me a PM(if you can) with your number. thanks, Greg

Re: S225TXRV blown powerhead - Rodbolt help

Hey Rodbolt,
posted on here the other week, but can't seem to get your attention because all the other yonko's keep posting and mine gets pushed to the bottom.

i blew a powerhead the other weekend; friends wife at the helm :(
after engine blew, i turned on the key and all gauges were green.
opened the hood and looked like a grenade went off. #6 blew a hole in the block and the engine oil tank was empty! wtf!

just to test some things, i then turned key on and manual switch, but oil tank not filling up.

sent it to a local yamaha shop and ordered a factory new powerhead for them to put on. i don't have the time right now to do it myself. could it be a bad engine oil tank switch? i did not have time to test it as i was strand, etc.
s225txrv.

Let me know if i can give you a call to pick your brain.
Thanks, Greg (cousinabe)

Re: S225TXRV blown powerhead - Rodbolt help

sorry about the bad luck.
normal cause of this is either the low level switch failed, not normal or someone did not properly do the maintenence.
normal.
the 3.1L oil tank was rather large, the swictch assy incorperated a 4 leaf clover looking piece of rubber to keep the bottom of the switch centered in the screen.
over time with todays oils the "feet" tended to curl up, preventing the float from dropping far enough to sound the low oil alarm or RPM reduction.

thats why at least every 6 months ya need to turn on the key and remove the water trap and drain the tank until the alarm sounds and once per year remove and inspect the guide.
