I really hate to start an oil thread, but anyway, is Penzoil SAE HD-30 the same as any other SAE 30 weight oil?

My OMC 260 is supposed have SAE 30 oil per the manual. I know any old oil would probably work, but I like to stick to the book if possible.

My guess is it's just a marketing thing and this oil is regular SAE 30.

Sometimes it's hard to find straight 30 weight oil tons of multi-V oil but slim pickins for 30 weight.,

Thanks,

happy holidays boaters!

Well....it's only been a week or so since the last one (about the same thing)......but we REALLY LIKE oil threads.......

Um.....yes. If it says SAE 30 on the container, it's SAE30.

Cheers,

Re: SAE 30 oil

Knowing the "grade", not just the viscosity rating is key to engine oil selection. If you look at the owners manual for your car for example it will specify (for example) SAE 5W-20 but the grade will be a two letter code such as SF, SE, SJ, etc. The importance of those two letters is that if SE was recommended when the engine was built, SJ will be ok. If you read the label it will say supercedes all earlier recommendations. But basically, the answer to your question is yes, SAE 30 is SAE 30. Be aware however of the two letter code. Some real inexpensive SAE 30 oil carries a lesser two digit code and may not be acceptable in your engine.

I always here that I live in California and if something like oil is hard to find it would be here. You need to buy it ahead of time so when you need it you got it here all auto stores have it.

Yes.

You can pretty much use ANY SAE 30 oil on the market.

Just DO NOT USE API SA oil. That is non-detergent type oil. Don't use it in anything (except maybe to lube a squeaky door!)

the grade will be a two letter code such as SF, SE, SJ, etc.

Grade of oil is either:
single grade (sae 30)
multi grade (10w-30)
turbine oil

Standards of oil is the two letter identifier.
For example, API CJ-4 will almost always list either SL or SM, API CI-4 with SL, API CH-4 with SJ, and so on.

30 is 30 if you use a major brand like Penzoil. Its the Walmart type brands that don't have some of the additives that make it crap.

Re: SAE 30 oil

I think everyone missed the "HD" he asked. Isn't that for diesels? Or just Heavy Duty....

I believe HD refers to Detergent level......."high detergent"?

Well,

He pretty much answered his own question.

um...no.

HD could be construed as for diesels but in reality, HD (other than marketing) really indicates ANY heavy duty application. Pickups/towing, Marine, Farm equipment, Stationary engine powered equipment, etc.

Oil for diesels has it's own specific API designation.

For anyone that wants to know more about what oil to use,

If you do not want to use the oil recommended by Mercury, Volvo Penta, OMC, GM Powertrain, FOMOCO, John Deere, Briggs and Stratton, Lauson Power Products, Scott-Atwater, and the multitude of others, you can pretty much use whatever you want.

It's all successfully been tried.

Every point that has been argued here almost weekly, in a new oil thread EVERY week, has been cussed and discussed at "Bob is The Oil Guy" til everyone is blue-in-the-face!

Some of these oil threads get heated because for some people (recreational oil-changers) motor oil is an emotional thing!! They feel better when they change their oil! It IS an effective placebo for some!!!

In every one these threads are people indicating "what they use, and have never had a problem"

I suppose we need an oil sticky....but as indicated by the number of people that cannot find the "Adults Only" sticky above, most "forum-newbies", would never find it..... and start a new "what kind of oil should I use?" thread.........;)

And we'd still have weekly oil threads asking the SAME tired (essentially VALID) questions!!

by the way, the oil I use is in my signature below!

Rick
