Hi,
I needed to replace my helm. I had just the regular Saf-T helm, but the new one I got is the Saf-T II (NFB). I got just the helm. I didnt really know how to get the old one out, so I struggled with it for a while, and one of the things I did that did not work was cut the bracket that holds the helm onto the dash. it is sort of U shaped, it has 3 bolt holes on the outside and six in a ring around the inside with a big hole in the middle for the steering shaft. Does anyone know where I can get a new bracket?
Thanks
-Jack

Re: Saf-T II Bracket

Also, it looks like the cable connection is very differnt. When I removed the old cable, it had a fitting on the end that just unscrewed from the helm. on the Saf-T II, the cable does not thread in. Do I have to remove the threaded fitting on the end of the cable?
Thanks,
-Jack

they are not compatible. you would have been better off buying a new system. go to teleflex.com and see if you can find a parts list.

Re: Saf-T II Bracket

Thanks for the response,
Yikes! 100 bucks for a cable. I think I might have a differnt cable than you are thinking of though. The cable broke a year ago and someone put in a new one. now that i look at the end of the cable that I have now and a picture on iboats, i think I might have the QCII, which (if i am not mistaken) can be used for both threaded or quickconnect? There is a little adapter like thing on the helm end of my current cable that looks like it is pictured with the QCII cable. It can rotate on the end of the cable and was screwed on to the old Safe-T helm. Can I just remove this adapter and use the same cable? If so, do I have to cut it off, because it looks like it was snapped on somehow with fasteners that dont look like they can be undone.
Thanks,
-Jack

Re: Saf-T II Bracket

I really think that I will have the right cable when i take the adapter off (correct me if Im wrong though). The only thing stopping me is how the adapter is fastened on. It looks like it wads sort of snapped on, with no clear way of undoing it. Any ideas on how to get it off? I could cut it with a dremel, but that has gotten me intto trouble before.
Thanks,
-Jack

Re: Saf-T II Bracket

There should be a clevis pin holding the cable into the adapter.
Also, on the outer edge of the adapter, near the end where the cable is inserted, there is a small hole.
You need to insert a nail or something similar into the hole, and push.
This should release the internal locking mechanism.
The cable should pull out.

Thanks Roscoe, I see how it goes together now.
However, the cable has been somewhat exposed, and I ahvve been cutting fiberglass and wood in that area, so the cable has gotten dirty. Does anyone know of a way to clean it and what I should lubricate it with after?
Thanks
