Safe timing for 200 with idle/adv module removed?

Hello,

I have a new to me 1991 Merc 200 V6 that the PO removed the idle/advance module. I'm planning on keeping it that way. The powerhead is in good condition with good compression (120+ on all six) What would be a safe WOT timing setting while cranking it over with the starter? I checked it today and it was set at 16 BTDC WOT and 4 ATDC idle. I set it at about a low 20 or 19.5 WOT and left the idle alone. I was wondering what I should set WOT timing while cranking? I know the motor will actually be 2 degrees higher while actually running. I don't want to risk setting it too high and grenading my motor. Thank you in advance

23 degrees is what JMartin and many others say. But I would go to the CDI electonics website and look for the spec on your year/model based on removing the advance module. It will probably say around the same 23 to 25, but it doesn't hurt to check. Perhaps the range given is for fine tuning? I don't know, but I'm curious.

The 91 200 hp is horse of a different color,it has the 14 pedal front half and makes about 215 hp. Merc service bulletin 91-35 gives max timing@ cranking 22 and WOT of 20, so your real close @ 20 with the chitty fuel today...

OK so do I set it at 20 WOT while cranking? or 22?

And what the hack is a 14 pedal front half and how do I know I have that? This motor had a CLE lower unit on it that I took off of it since it doesn't fit my use.

Sorry for the mis-information Wingtime, I got my info from a CDI Electronics document for years 1978-1996.

It means the front crankcase has the larger 14 pedal reeds vs the standard 10 pedal, it flows more ...set the timing @ 21 cranking and that will give you 19 @WOT. A Merc retards and a OMC advances At WOT

I did some searching on the 14 pedals or reeds front end last night. Interesting stuff. I'm at just under 20 now so I'm real close. Gonna take it for a test ride and maybe see about adding the additional degree. Thanks!

Anyone know where might I find pictures of 14 pedal reeds? I've been searching with no luck. TY

OK cool. I was imagining it had 14 petals on each side of the reed plate..... it actually has 7 petals on each side... So I would assume some people call this a 7 petal reed?

Re: Safe timing for 200 with idle/adv module removed?

I was looking at my power head to see if I could find a serial number on the power head itself. I just had a feeling this thing was too clean for a 91. No numbers were on the welsh plug... Then I found the date code just behind the case split at the base of #2 cylinder. It is dated 11-11-96. So I guess I have a 96 or 97 model year power head. This would explain the lack of the accelerator pumps on my carbs. So I'm guessing someone put a new or factory reman powerhead on this thing.
