so my motor cranks but it has no spark. how do i bypass the safety kill switch? i just want to see if that will be the problem, i have no intention of removing that feature. sometimes the motor starts, sometimes it dosent. sometimes it starts when i mess with the idle control lever and throttle, thanks!

i want to rule out that the switch is faulty or some wires are no good for the safety kill.

Model number would help. To determine if you have a key switch/kill switch issue donthe following:

On a modern J/E motor with one power pack locate the amphenol connector at the pack, disconnect it and jump all the wires except the blk/yel wire. If you now have sparked the problem is in the key switch or kill switch and sometimes still the pack but further testing is required.

So, if you know have a spark it is time to use an ohm meter on the switches. We need to know what style kill switch you have. Is your lanyard attached to the throat of the key switch or is it a clip that goes to a seperate switch?

The model number may or may not help with this. It would be easiest if you took a picture and posted it of your remote control box and the kill switch lanyard assembly and switch. I say this because the model engine you have could be with an earlier or later remote control

Early '80s 140 Johhny IIRC. Safety lanyard disconnected and it would still crank, but no spark. I believe when the lanyard is on, the switch is open, and when the lanyard is off it shorts to ground, just like switching the key to OFF.

For safety purposes, most will shut down when the lanyard is removed but will restart w/o it. Have never used a lanyard on mine

So much unknown here. We need a picture of both your control box and kill switch. We can't know what your problem is without knowing certain things. So post a picture or three. There are so many kill switch options out there that we have no idea which you are working with.
