I was just wondering how many boaters out there check/replace thier fire extinguishers every year ?
How many here don't think they even need them / don't have one ?

I just bought a couple replacements at wally world , along with some nav lights for my new project .

I try to check every time I use the boat. You do not need to replace them every year. You should also mention that flares expire and need replacement every 3-4 years.

Re: Safety question ....

Good answer . ;)

Mine are getting old , even though the gauges read fine .
$12 each is cheap insurance , and , I'll keep the old ones for backup / spares .

FYI , dry chem extinguishers should be shaken every so often , as the dry chem can cake in the bottom and render it virtually useless .
NOT the thing you want to have happen when you have a need for it to work .

Don't just glance at the gauge before every trip , take it off of the mount , turn it upside down and give it a good shaking for 30 seconds to a minute .
It could very well save your rig , maybe your life .

For the small waters I boat on , flares are not a great concern , although I do carry them .
They make GREAT fire starters should you happen to need one in an emergency , like capsizing or sinking in cold weather . :D

I also carry a dry bag with survival gear(multi-tool , folding saw , fire starter , couple of trash bags , headlamp , first-aid kit , and , a change of dry clothes).
The bag is never tied down or stuffed in a compartment , it is left on the deck so it has minimal chance of getting trapped in the hull if I do sink or capsize.
Also , it is a bright yellow color , so , it is easily visible in low light conditions , and , it has 2 pack straps so it is easily used as a back pack .
Yes , it floats . I checked that TWICE , lol .

Chance favors the prepared mind .

When we bought our boat in sig last year, it had the origional fire extinguishers which still said they were good. I didnt trust them, so I bought some nre Kiddie ones at WalMart. I feel a little safer now. (He also had flares from 92 which i replaced as well lol)

Fire extinguishers do expire. Check the bottom, you should see a date. If the date has passed then you should replace it. The one on the jon I just bought is dated 01. So I think ill be buying a new one before summer rolls around.
Depending on the type. They are good for 4-8 years.

I check mine . . .

I've only mentioned this a few times as I am totally embarrassed about it, but I needed mine last year . . . My fault, as a backfire lit some gas while I was trying to prime a dead EFI engine . . . If I wasn't able to get to the Fire Extinguisher quickly the whole boat could've gone up

I don't replace mine until they expire. At the start of the boating season, I go through the motions of different scenarios we could encounter with my two boys (11 & 14) before leaving the house. The best times are when I do replace my exstinguishers we have live-fire training with the old ones. I feel alot more confident in my sons' abilities if something should arise.

A couple of tips the Coast Guard Aux gave during one of the classes I took.

Mount two extinguishers one Vertical as normal and one horizontal (Takes an extra mount for the bottom). Then every trip or two you rotate the extinguishers. This helps the power to stay loose.

If you ever need the extinguishers and no power comes out stop and slame it against the floor to break the power loose then try it again.

For sure take them out of the mount now and then and turn upside down and listen for the power to slide down. You can also feel it slide down.

For what it worth when boarded by the Coast Guard a couple of years back all they did was tap the guage and make sure it was in the good zone.

I've seen the guys who service our extinguishers annually use a rubber mallet on the dry chemical extinguishers.

I just got a new one... Wal mart has these cool tiny ones now that come in what looks almost like a spray-paint can for those who have boats too small to warrant a full-sized extinguisher. They are also great for the glove box in the tow vehicle.

Re: Safety question ....

I have 2 new ones on board, both for different types of fires.

I will tell you one thing, unless it is a small fire that Im sure to be able to put out in a few seconds, the boat can burn. Boat fires can spread very quickly and get out of control in seconds. Id rather bail and swim to the shore (all boating we do is lake) and collect the insurance.
