Re: saftey switch

Normally the neutral safety switch is wired in series with the starter solenoid. So connect the yellow/red (from the key) to one of the purple wires and the other will run to the solenoid.

There is yellow/red wires coming from the control box and the key switch
do i hook the wires from the box to the y/r wires key switch and tie one of the purples in with it. and the other purple wire to the starter solenoid?

Are you saying you have these purple wires and yellow/red wires coming from the control box?

the control box has two y/r wires, and the run off (safety switch) has a prurple and a purple with white strip. then the key switch has the two t/r wires i assume the y/r wires coming from the box and key switch will connect together. i am putting a different motor along with new controls and i am in the process of wiring everything up. the run off switch was busted so i bought a new one, most of the wires will color match except the p/w and purple wire from switch. this is my first install with any of this thanks for you input it is highky appreciated.

Re: saftey switch

Several questions...

1. What controls are you installing?
2. What control were there before?
3. What engine are you installing?
4. What is a 'run off switch'?
5. What are t/r wires?

The controls are quicksilver with a 8 pin wiring harness, these controls where hooked up on a 2003 optimax. i am installing a 1998 merc 200 efi the run off switch is part of the controls located at lower left of the outside plate it has a red toggle switch that you can push up to the run position and down for off i though maybe this would be the safety switch. and the wires are yellow with red strip not t/r soory.

OK... we can start to get our terminology right.... The switch you are calling 'run off' is a deadman switch. A safety switch is the neutral switch that stops the engine being started in gear.

The deadman switch should connect the ignition kill wire (black/yellow) to ground. When the switch is open (UP position) the kill wire is not grounded, so the engine will run. Close the switch (down position) and the engine will stop. The neutral safety switch stops the engine being started unless the controls are in neutral and is in the starter solenoid circuit, yellow/red.

Hope this helps...

Dead man switch Gotcha, does both purpl/w wire and the solid purple connect with the black/yellow wire ?

Purple within Mercs (Standard BIA wiring codes) is usually associated with +12v, so I am a tad confused. If you are absolutely sure that the wires come from the deadman switch, then I would connect one to the kill wire (Black/yellow) and the other to ground, but as I said, purple is usually +12v.... Proceed with caution....

Re: saftey switch

I've had a look in my service manuals and I can't see any Optimax controls with the deadman switch at the back, they are all on the side. Can you post a picture of the control, and tell us which engine it was supplied with (hp and year).

All the circuit of control boxes I have show the wires from the deadman as being black and black/yellow.

Re: saftey switch

It's just occurred to me, those controls you have are for an I/O. With an I/O the deadman will be removing power from the ignition, hence the purple colours.

You can use them with an outboard, and connect them to the ignition kill wire and the ground.

Purple -> Ground (any black wire)
Purple/white -> black/yellow (ignition kill wire)

I would also mark the control box as such, for the next person who works on it...

Cheers,

Chris.......

Re: saftey switch

Sounds like a concealed mount and the replacement "kill" switch is for a sterndrive as they use the purple colors on the kill circuit. If you are 100% sure these wires have no voltage and just attach to kill switch, attach one end to blk and other end to blk/yel...Just ohm them first as a outboard is closed on stop whereas astern drive is open on stop

You guys are great:) thank u so much i thought these controls are kinda wierd because the work different. there are two cables for operation one that works when the throttle goes forward and the other cable only works the reverse. which means i cant use the hot foot you cant have 3 cables. thanks guys for all your help.

Re: saftey switch

Somethings wrong or not hooked up correctly as you cannot attach 2 cable to engine bracket for shifting.

Re: saftey switch

One of those wires is your alarm, and the other is the trim gauge... You need to hook the alarm up as it is for overheat warning.
