This is the can of worthless spraypaint that I used - actually two of them. I scuffed up my outdrive, then painted my outdrive with this EXPENSIVE AS SH!* paint and just today I took a look. I actually have green grassy looking stuff GROWING from the out drive.

Tomorrow I'm going to pull the boat out and take some pics.

How the HECK can a company sell such a worthless product and get away with it? I honestly cannot think of a product that has underperformed so well.

Sigh.

You keep an outdrive in salt water??? I think the least of your problems is going to be green stuff.

One of the many benefits of trailering and launching your boat everytime you hit the water... stuff never grows on your boat!;):p:D

Biggest reason mine still sits on a trailer! That and the fear of it quietly sinking when I'm not looking :)

I've sprayed my outdrives with paint and have never had a problem.

99% of paint issues are because of poor surface prep and not the paint itself.

I have had the same experience as the OP. As a matter of fact, everytime I discover a good outdrive antifouling paint, it goes off the market, due to being banned from use.

There is a pretty good alternative. Use some Trilux antifouling paint. Brush on two coats in the spring and you should really reduce the slime and barnacles. of course, if the boat is in the water (especially warm water) for 6 mo or longer, you will get some growth.

Trilux is made for aluminum, but requires a barrior coat to protect the aluminum. Prep accordingly.

I always love these replies. It's like you guys think saltwater is some sort of acid that just disintegrates anything that touches it in an instant. Come on over to my marina and you'll see plenty of outdrive boats that have spent every April through October sitting in saltwater for the last 20-30 years and they're doing just fine.

Did you prime your outdrive first?

+1 for Trilux. MUCH better than the crap in a spray can.

Another +1 for Trilux 33. I think all the important points have been hit here.

1) Proper preparation.

2) Proper priming using a primer recommended by the paint manufacturer.

3) Spray on anti-fouling paint takes many, many coats. Look at the recommended thickness is mil on the application intructions. The only way to efficiently achieve this is by purchasing a quart and brushing on in coats. Avoid the spray and brush on anti-fouling paint.

I have had no issues.

I did properly prep it, took me a whole 3 days of vacation to get the job done.. then I let it sit for 48 hours in nice dry warm air to dry.

I'm going to pull it out today and post some more pics of how great this product works, on the way down I'm gonna buy a quart of trilux

Uh-oh. I guess I'd better replace my 14-year-old drives right now, and warn my friend with his 1992 Larson to do the same. The guy at my dock with the 1983 Mark Twain and Merc drive is probably about to sink, too. Thanks for the warning!

Okay, I'm funning with you, but comments like these either annoy me or make me laugh (depends on my mood). None of these boats has any corrosion or operating issues, and none receives any more than routine annual maintenance, new zincs and anti-fouling paint.

As for the OP's post, I agree that the spray stuff is crap. In these waters it's barnacles and spray paint doesn't cut it. My marina uses Aquaguard (brush-on) paint on the outdrives and tabs. Several people have told me it works great... I don't know yet. I'll probably get into the water this weekend to inspect and scrape whatever's on them. I can tell you there's plenty of green slime, but that's pretty normal. A scotchbrite pad will clean it right off.

So you did primer it? Weird.

Skargo, The issue is not the prep of the outdrive. You can still do it perfect and although the spray AF paint will stay on and look good, its' ability to repel marine growth is poor.

I do not think the OP was complaining about the paint falling off....
