Saltwater protection?

Harbor patrol informed me that my new 8HP outboard in the tilt-up position made my sailboat too long for the slip. Therefore I have to keep it in the down position in the saltwater. Anyone here dealt with using a container to put over the shaft before lowering the engine? Bought a garbage can, but it is pretty buoyant and tough to lower the engine with. Thinking about thick mil plastic bags to swing over the shaft. Does anyone know if this will help or if someone has found another type of solution? Hate to think of my new motor just sitting there in the water deteriorating.

Thats a great idea!!! Heavy plastic bag will work great. Many here will say that there is no problem leaving it in the water uncovered but I am 1000% in favor of keeping it tilted out of the water or in your case --covered in the water. You can also check with some rubbermaid products made for storing wrapping paper that may work even better.Charlie

I would try to find out what the habor patrol guy's beverage of choice is and see if a fifth or two would solve the problem.

Heavy mil bag the ticket. Find the industrial 55 gallon size. If not, white grease and some extra zinc attached.

You're getting hasseled because your out board sticks out too much?

That's hard for me to grasp.
Is that the 4th item from the top of page 86, in the book, "What difference does it make", or what?

Gosh, I've heard stories about Calif., and how nutty the people out there can be; but this beats all.

I could never imagine any person in authority, much less a set of rules being so 'analy retentive'.

Worrying about such chicken chi$ stuff like that in my day-to-day existance would darn near suck my will to live.

Whew,,,,,

I admire your strength. I couldn't do it. I'd have to move, do something that would make the lead story on the nightly news; or just get up on the roof, drink poison, slash my wrists, then jump off.

My brother lives Northern Ca...crummy little lake that you must go counterclockwise only,(jetskis banned) 2 strokes getting banned, (eventually just pontoons with electric motors at this rate soon) million dollar fake seawalls that look like rock in front of look at me houses. Beat the Jone's. Sunny weather most of the time. Puget sound? I'll take the rain in the winter...keeps the assholes away.

Do you have the motor on one of those lift up brackets? Some of them may lift high enough to get your motor out of the water, especially if you put it in shallow water tilt.
