Any words of advice on putting my freshwater boat in to do some back - bay and river mouth fishing down in the Florida panhandle.

I know the boat can handle the water on a normal day, and I will have to watch the charts real close, but what's the potential for messing up an engine or boat? Any precautions to take ahead of time or special things to do afterwards?
I have never operated a boat in the salty stuff before.

Fresh water wash down of boat and trailer and run the engine on a flush muff for 5-10 minutes. What make of engine and boat you got?

I have a 76 Johnson 115hp on an old gull wing Ranger. I was asking this as a general subject because my fishin' buddy has a much better boat with a 225 Mercury I believe it is. We would like to go down to Appalachicola in April and try out the trout and redfish and thought it would be nice to try it in our own boats. But being freshwater guys we were concerned with what we might be getting into.

I've boated exclusively in salt water for several decades with no corrosive issues.Just got to washem down well and flush the engines after use.Pledge furniture polish works wonders on the boat gunnels, hand rails, console, and motor exterior.Maintains the luster.Toughest thing to deal with might be carpeting if your boat has it.Little more difficult to get all of the salt out if it gets soaked but not any harder than freshwater fish slime is.Go slaughter some reds and don't worry.

Re: Saltwater Try

i recently took my boat out in the bay and in salt water for the first time, i was able to rinse it all down but i'm not sure how to go about rinsing the motor aside from dunking it in a barrel. Is there a flush attachment for the older motors? (67 evi. 60hp sportfour) There isnt anywhere to put muffs on..
Dont mean to high jack the post but it's kinda along the same lines and could help newtong also.

They use to sell a flushette at the local shops years back that spring clipped to the anti-ventilation plate and directed water to waterpump intake via a curved scupper.
